‘The Big One’

Sometimes as Christians, we manage to cope with many ongoing aggravations and annoyances but then, there are those times when we face the ‘big one’. Without warning, we find ourselves facing an acutely painful or difficult situation – it’s kind of like that big wave that rocks our little boats of ‘copable’ moments and leaves us raw with emotion. That emotion may be anger, fear or even worse. If we trust Him, Jesus will see us through those acute moments of temptation and stress.

I’ve been thinking about David’s experience with Nabal, which is described in 1 Samuel 25. Nabal insulted David so badly that he was moved to take vengeance and would have done so had not Abigail, Nabal’s sensible wife, intervened. Here we see David, the man who killed a lion and a bear in tender protectiveness for his sheep and the man who saved Israel from the Philistines by winning Goliath, nearly overcome with rage by the insults of foolish Nabal.

The enemy of our souls knows the things that will cut us deeply and he will try to spring them on us when we are at our most vulnerable. We will be tempted where we will feel it most but in those moments, let us reach our shaking hands out to Jesus. He understands human emotion, human feelings and thoughts. If we trust Him, He will comfort us and help us to overcome those big waves of trouble and temptation that could destroy us. May He send our ‘Abigails’ and may He also teach us not to trust in our own ability to stand but to be aware of our own weaknesses and to rely on His strength all the time.
